What Is a Study Permit
Everything you need to know before you apply.
A Canadian Study Permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Most international students studying programs longer than 6 months require one.
You apply for your study permit before arriving in Canada using IRCC Form IMM 1294. GetNorthPath's AI auto-fills this form using your uploaded documents - and an GetNorthPath check the completed application before you submit it to IRCC.
You must be accepted first
You need a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
before applying. IRCC verifies this against the DLI database.
Apply early - don't wait
Processing takes 5–20 weeks depending on your country of citizenship. Apply at least
3–4 months before your program start date.
Work rights included
Most study permit holders can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic
sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks.
Pathway to PR
Graduating from a Canadian institution opens the door to the Post-Graduation Work
Permit (PGWP) and eventually Permanent Residency through Express Entry or PNP.
Eligibility
Do you qualify for a Canadian study permit?
Most international students qualify, but IRCC evaluates several factors. Here's what counts for and against your application.
You're more likely to be approved if...
You have a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
You have sufficient funds - CAD 10,000+ per year (plus tuition) in a bank
statement
You have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your program end
date
You have a language test score meeting your institution's requirements (IELTS,
CELPIP, TOEFL)
You can demonstrate ties to your home country (property, family, employment)
You have a clean criminal record and good health
Your intended program is a full-time course of study at a recognized DLI
Your application may be refused if...
Your bank statement doesn't show sufficient funds consistently over 3–6 months
Your Letter of Acceptance is from a non-DLI institution
You can't demonstrate clear intent to return home after your studies
Documents are expired, inconsistent, or missing pages
Your passport expires before or during your program
There are immigration violations or prior refusals in your history
Your study plan doesn't clearly explain why you chose Canada and this program

Common Mistakes
The top 6 reasons study permits get refused - and how we prevent them.
1
Insufficient proof of funds
Bank statements don't show enough money (CAD 10,000+ per year beyond tuition), or
the balance only appeared recently - a red flag for IRCC.
AI checks your balance across 3–6 months and flags inconsistencies on upload.
2
Weak study plan letter
A generic statement of purpose that doesn't explain why Canada, why this program,
and why you'll return home convinces no IRCC officer.
GetNorthPath personally reviews and strengthens your study plan before
submission.
3
Expired or incomplete passport
Passport expires before the program ends, or not all pages are submitted. Even blank
pages are required for some nationalities.
AI scans expiry date and completeness on upload - caught in seconds.
4
Letter of Acceptance issues
LOA missing DLI number, incorrect program dates, or the institution isn't on the DLI
list. IRCC will reject without investigation.
AI cross-validates your LOA against the official IRCC DLI database instantly.
5
IMM 1294 form errors
Manual form-filling leads to typos, wrong dates, or inconsistencies between the form
and supporting documents. IRCC returns or refuses these files.
AI auto-fills IMM 1294 from your verified documents - no manual entry, no
mismatches.
6
No ties to home country
IRCC officers must be convinced you intend to return home. Without demonstrating
family, property, or employment ties, your application raises red flags.
GetNorthPath helps you prepare evidence of home-country ties as part of your
application package.

Study permit questions, answered.
Processing times vary by country of citizenship. Most applicants wait between 5 and 20
weeks. India-based applicants typically wait 8–16 weeks; Nigeria 10–20 weeks; Philippines 6–12 weeks; UK and
USA applicants typically 5–8 weeks. Apply at least 3–4 months before your program start date. GetNorthPath

IMM 1294 is the IRCC application form for a Canadian study permit for applicants outside
Canada. It contains 22 fields covering personal information, passport details, financial information,
educational history, and your Canadian study institution. GetNorthPath's AI fills every field automatically
using data extracted from your uploaded documents - your passport, Letter of Acceptance, bank statement, and
test score report. you review the completed form before submission.
IRCC requires proof that you can cover tuition fees, living expenses, and your return
transportation. As a general guide, you need to show at least CAD 10,000 for the first year of study (in
addition to your first year's tuition). Funds must be shown consistently in your bank statement over at
least 3–6 months - a large deposit made just before applying is a red flag. GetNorthPath's AI checks your
balance history when you upload your statement and flags any issues immediately.
Yes. Most study permit holders can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular
academic sessions, and full-time during scheduled breaks (summer, winter holidays). Some programs also
include co-op or internship work authorizations. Upon graduation, you may be eligible for the
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which is a critical pathway toward Permanent Residency through Express
Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs.
If your study permit is refused, IRCC provides a refusal letter outlining the reason.
Common reasons include insufficient funds, weak study plan, or inconsistent documents. GetNorthPath's AI and
GetNorthPath checks catches these issues before submission - significantly reducing the likelihood of
refusal. If you've had a previous refusal, GetNorthPath can assess the refusal reason and build a
stronger reapplication. We support inadmissibility and appeal cases as well - see our Status Restoration
pathway page.
Not all applicants need a medical exam. Medical exams are typically required if you are
from certain countries identified by IRCC, or if your program involves working with children or in
healthcare settings for 6+ months. During your free tools, your GetNorthPath the GetNorthPath team will
confirm whether a medical exam applies to your situation and which IRCC-approved panel physicians in your
country you should visit.
The free covers our complete end-to-end study permit service: free tools, secure

Submit as early as you can once you have a valid Letter of Acceptance and complete
financial documents-typically at least 3–4 months before your program start, and earlier if you are in a
high-volume visa office or close to intake deadlines. IRCC processing times are estimates only; a complete
file prepared early reduces last-minute risk.
